Greek chocolate balls

Shape these chocolate treats in the form of little bells before rolling on powdered sugar and give tem for Christmas as an alterntive to melomakarona, the Greek Christmas butter cookies flavored with brandy, clove and orange rind.

Greek chocolate balls

A sweet chocolate treat with a hint of rum. Reserve for a special occasion.

Ingredients

USA  
1 lb    sweet milk chocolate, chopped into medium sized pieces  
1 lb    walnuts, shelled, skin removed and ground - about 1 cup ground  
3 cup    powdered sugar  
4 Tbs    cream  
3 Tbs    rum as flavoring  
  powdered sugar for coating  
 
Metric  
450 g     sweet milk chocolate, chopped into medium sized pieces  
450 g     walnuts, shelled, skin removed and ground - about 250 g ground  
700 g     powdered sugar  
60 ml     cream  
45 ml     rum as flavoring  
  powdered sugar for coating  

Procedure

  1. Place chocolate in a bowl and melt.
  2. Add ground almond, sugar, cream and rum to the smooth melted chocolate. Mix well.
  3. Leave to cool a little then shape into little balls. Roll each ball in powdered sugar.

Cooking tips

  • You can use a food processor to mix all the ingredients.
  • If you don't h have them, substitute walnuts with almonds or pecans.
  • You can melt chocolate in the microwave, a double boiler or set the bowl in a shallow pan of hot water until it melts.
  • Experiment with othet spirits such as vodka, brandy to vary the flavor.
  • Substitute rum with rose water if you want a treat with no alcohol.
