Swiss fried apples and bread

Sweet fried apples with bread is another Swiss option for breakfast. Also serve this one as a dessert -with vanilla ice cream or crumbled cookies on top- or as a side dish with ham or roasted pork -adding a pinch of nutmeg.

Another Swiss breakfast option and surely a favorite with children. The flavors of apples and cinnamon blend beautifully.

Ingredients

USA Imperial  
4 Tbs    unsalted butter  
2   apples, peeled, cored, quartered and sliced thin  
1 pinch   cinnamon  
2 Tbs   brown sugar  
4 slices     white bread, toasted and cubed  
 
Metric  
100 g     unsalted butter  
  apples, peeled, cored, quartered and sliced thin  
1 pinch   cinnamon  
50 g   brown sugar  
4 slices   white bread, toasted and cubed  

Servings: 4

Procedure

  1. Heat 2 Tbs butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. When the butter is bubbling, add apple slices and sprinkle cinnamon and sugar over. Cook for 5-6 minutes, turning frequently with a spatula.
  3. Add diced, toasted bread and turn heat to medium low. Continue to cook for another 5-6 minutes, stirring frequently.
  4. Place cooked apple and bread slices on a serving platter and top with remaining butter.
  5. Serve immediately.

Cooking Tips

  • Use honey instead of maple syrup.
  • Cut the toasted bread slices into 3/4 inch (190 mm) cubes.
  • For strict vegetarians, substitute butter with vegetable margarine or vegetable oil. Nut oil adds a nice touch, try it.
