Topic of conversation
On the flip side of a light hearted dinner conversation, from time to time we find ourselves in a quandary when the current news is such that it must be discussed. As an intelligent society, this is natural and a necessity. I offer you a commentary on how the news which is brought by word of mouth to our dining rooms and to our reserved tables at restaurants becomes a “topic of conversation.”
When there is coverage of tragedy, we sense relief from bringing this topic forth to share our grief. We try to sort out the details by trading back and forth the facts that this one heard, or that one heard. Instead of feeling as if you are just one person, you become stronger by the exchanges and you are able to put the new view into an easier place in your brain.
When news covers local events from organized groups in our neighborhoods, over dinner we will learn what we can do to pitch in and help out. Very often it is at the shared meal that we also learn what our kids need to be careful of and what we can do to help them. The news also covers elections in towns and cities and it is when dining with friends that we may learn about the upcoming changes which may affect us.
News of our world is ever changing, and always a topic of conversation. It is nearly impossible to track all that happens and in this case, we may share as a topic of conversation the manner in which we receive our news. One might say “I only get my news in the morning”, or “I only get my news from the Internet”. Over a meal, we will discuss the news, or find out which news we missed.

There is one topic in the news this week of a different sort, one which will bring many to just mention it and simply dismiss it. It seems that OJ Simpson will again be in the news after 11 years. As a free citizen, he has a right to promote a book and this is protected and guaranteed by law. From topic to title, this book is one that needs to go away quickly. As many families understand, with the passage of time we assign grief a place. The pain of losing a loved one needs to lie undisturbed in a safe place. This whole subject is even less digestible than the recollections of that glove.
