Wine in Spain
-Spanish regions-
Central plains
CASTILE-LEON
Castile's Ribera del Duero is the source of Spain's most famous wine: Vega Sicilia, a red wine made mostly from tempranillo grapes.
The white wines from Rueda, crisp and fruity, are made from verdejo grapes.
From Toro, in Zamora, come some strong reds, due to the hotter climate that ripens the grapes to great richness, and El Bierzo specializes in light reds made from Mencía grape.
LA MANCHA
La Mancha has large vineyards and it used to produce wines to sell in bulk -they were cheap and popular- but it is undergoing its particular wine revolution. Valdepeñas is producing large quantities of fine wine. They are experimenting with new grape verieties to add to the local Arién and Cencibel -local name for Tempranillo.
EXTREMADURA
The reds from Ribera del Guadiana are gaining adepts between Spanish wine lovers.
Apart from wine, there is wonderful food to discover in Spain. Food in Spain through the day is an adventure; so it is food shopping in a Spanish market. See how to lay a Spanish table for some ideas. Before laying the table, check some Spanish food recipes to put together your menu.
