- Heat 2 Tbs butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- When the butter is bubbling, add apple slices and sprinkle cinnamon and sugar over. Cook for 5-6 minutes, turning frequently with a spatula.
- Add diced, toasted bread and turn heat to medium low. Continue to cook for another 5-6 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Place cooked apple and bread slices on a serving platter and top with remaining butter.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
Use honey instead of maple syrup.
Cut the toasted bread slices into 3/4 inch (190 mm) cubes.
For strict vegetarians, substitute butter with vegetable margarine or vegetable oil. Nut oil adds a nice touch, try it.

Remarkable
Sweet fried apples with bread is another Swiss option for breakfast. Also serve this one as a dessert - with vanilla ice cream or crumbled cookies on top - or as a side dish with ham or roasted pork -adding a pinch of nutmeg.
